About Ishmeet Singh
My name is Ishmeet Singh and I am going to be a high school senior this fall. Sikhi and Gurmat Sangeet has always been a big part of my family. I started learning Kirtan at a young age from my dad and have continued to expand my knowledge of Gurmat Sangeet with the help of trainers such as Harlove and Manjeev paaji. I have played Dilruba and Israj for the last 6 years and hope to continue to improve my vocal and instrumental skills through opportunities such as GSRI.
GSRIyaz
GSRIyaz is an app based on the concepts covered in the Gurmat Sangeet Research Internship. The app is a collection of tools to understand and practice Gurmat Sangeet. GSRIyaz is available on Apple App Store and Google Play Store for free.
The first release has seven tools:
- The Translator tool allows you to select one of the 31 raags from Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the scale (such as C#, D#, A#, and so on) and it shows Aaroh and Avroh of the raag in the selected scale. This tool is useful for instrument tuning or for quick reference of notes in the raag.
- The Notes2Raag tool shows the raags that make use of the provided three or more notes.
- The Sur Abhyas tool allows you to generate random sequences from the notes/phrases provided.
- The Alankars tool can be used to build and practice alankars based on the notes selected.
- The Layakaari tool allows you to practice the concepts of taal jaatis and chhands. For a given phrase of surs, this tool can generate random sequences of notes in selected jaati (for example, 3-3-2 or 4-4 for a given phrase of 8 notes).
- The Ear Training tool is a quiz based approach for ear training - where you listen to an audio clip and guess the notes or taal used in the recording.
- Similar to Ear Training, the Raag Quest tool allows you to play a clip and guess the raag.
